November saw two new entries for the Australian Newsroom Mapping Project, and in a lovely end to 2020, they were both new arrivals to the public interest journalism landscape.

Both the The Gunnedah Times (Gunnedah NSW) and The Port App (Port Macquarie-Hastings NSW) launched in November.

Another three entries were added, all new mastheads/websites:

  • The Fleurieu App (Victor Harbor SA, opened Aug 2019)
  • The Orange App (Orange NSW, opened Dec 2019)
  • The Hunter App (Hunter Region NSW, opened June 2020)

For context, the App series are built on a common platform but have a range of different publishers. New Zealand company IAppNetwork created the platform and licenses it for hyperlocal news producers.

Also built on the same platform is The Lismore App, launched 2018, and there are preparations under way for two more; The Bugle (Kiama NSW) and The Western Plains App (Coonamble NSW). Both are expected in January 2021.

The Australian Newsroom Mapping Project currently has 251 active entries, consisting of 194 contractions and 57 expansions.
