News is an essential service – as highlighted by successive national emergencies. Its diversity and coverage are essential to inform our citizens, strengthen our community and safeguard our democracy.
PIJI is a limited shelf-life initiative, established to catalyse systemic change to ensure public interest journalism’s ongoing sustainability.
PIJI is philanthropically funded, and focuses on three research areas as indicators of public interest journalism’s health:
- Assessment of its diversity
- Measures of public support and recognition of its value
- Investment and financial sustainability for the news media industry.
In its first 18 months, PIJI has completed eight major projects, including submissions to the ACCC’s Digital Platforms Inquiry and Mandatory News Bargaining Code. In a short period of time, we have gained credibility as a central, independent and key voice with a broad base of stakeholders. Our ongoing research is both critical and far-reaching.
Philanthropic support is fundamental to our ability to undertake key research and inform policy design, despite our small size.
With your gifts, we can accelerate our impact – to a sustainable and diverse marketplace of public interest journalism – and PIJI need no longer exist.
