November 24, 2023

In her first appearance before the National Press Club, the Communications Minister focused on the government’s efforts to improve online safety.

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland appeared before the National Press Club this week to speak about online safety and the government’s program of communications reforms.

The Minister listed three anchors to her approach to online safety:

  • addressing the power and information imbalance by increasing the transparency and accountability of platforms and services and empowering regulators to hold them to account.
  • acknowledging that the way harms manifest in the online environment is different to how they manifest offline and using this to inform policy.
  • listening to researchers and experts in the area.

She also outlined the government’s recent work in online safety, including with international partners, and the appointment of Delia Rickard PSM to lead the government’s review of the Online Safety Act.
