Investigating a sustainable future for public interest journalism

FAQ

Public interest journalism is news that informs the community. It is the accurate, reliable journalism that lies at the heart of public discussion, diversity of voice, open justice, accountability and informed decision-making. It is an essential public good, and it is under threat from governments, operating conditions and leaders both here in Australia and around the world. Ensuring its survival is the reason why PIJI exists.

PIJI is a philanthropically-funded initiative, operating in partnership with the University of Melbourne’s Centre for Advancing Journalism. We receive philanthropic support from the Susan McKinnon Foundation, H and L Hecht Trust, Ruffin Falkiner Foundation and Jibb Foundation. We also receive valuable support from other philanthropic individuals and organisations, as well as some government funding.

PIJI is grateful for this support.

PIJI is a philanthropically funded, non-profit company limited by guarantee. We are registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission, the national charities regulator. We are governed by a board of independent, voluntary directors with expertise in media, economics, law, public policy, research, philanthropy and business.

The Australian News Data Report is PIJI’s landmark research project, assessing media diversity and plurality in Australia. It has multiple components, including interactive visualisations to track changes over time. You can access the Australian News Data Report here.

PIJI publishes monthly and quarterly reports, as well as ongoing data mapping of the state of media outlets in Australia. You can explore our research, data and reports here.

PIJI is a frequent contributor to government inquiries on issues affecting public interest journalism, including philanthropy, tax reform and press freedom. You can find copies of our submissions on our website.

Since 2019, PIJI has revealed the consolidation in local news availability around Australia.
