TERM DEFINITION
Australian News Data Project PIJI’s flagship research project, a body of work designed to assess media diversity and plurality. It encompasses news landscape data collection, visualisation and reporting.
Australian News Index The Australian News Index (ANI) is a searchable database of state/territory, national and non-geographic news producers.
Australian News Data Report A monthly report detailing changes made to PIJI’s database of news producers in Australia, as well as a data sheet reflecting the quantitative results of that month’s research. The report discusses changes and updates in news production gathered in the Australian News Index and Mapping projects, and trend analysis of new monthly results from the Australian News Sampling Project.
Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status A deductible gift recipient (DGR) is an organisation that can receive donations that are tax deductible. Tax deductible donations can be deducted from a donor’s taxable income when they lodge their tax return.
Generative AI An artificial intelligence system able to produce content, in response to prompts from a user. This can be written word, video or photography.
Hyperlocal Characteristic of, or associated with, a small area within a particular locality.
Localism News reflecting the depth and breadth of a small geographic space, typically limited to a small number of communities.
Local news Stories with a local focus servicing smaller, more specific geographic areas rather than state or national scales.
Media diversity and pluralism The idea that a healthy number of diverse, original news outlets covering a region results in greater engagement with democratic processes and a lower likelihood of unbalanced influence over public opinion. Media diversity and pluralism describes the variety seen across the PIJ landscape and also the number of outlets.
Misinformation Incorrect or misleading information.
News desert A community with limited or no access to credible news on any platform.
News landscape/ecosystem The environment in which news publishers operate, whether digital or physical, local or national, including all major stakeholders e.g. other media outlets, governments, funders and news audiences.
News Media Bargaining Code A legislative code, overseen by the Australian Communications and Media Authority, designed to address bargaining power imbalances between digital platforms and Australian news businesses.
News organisation A company that publishes journalism.
Outlet A news publisher.
Philanthropy A charitable act or gift.
Platform Media channel used to publish news, for instance online, social media, broadcast TV, streaming TV, print and so on.
Public interest journalism Original content that records, reports or investigates issues of public significance for Australians; issues relevant to engaging Australians in public debate and in informing democratic decision making, or content which relates to community and local events.
Reporting News stories resulting from original research and interviews.
