The Australian News Index recorded 13 changes in its March report, resulting in a net expansion of two outlets, taking the number of outlets to 1,211 across digital, radio and television news producers (or formats).
During March, there was one market change, with the opening of The Spark, a new local news website covering the Shoalhaven region of New South Wales.
Twelve other changes were noted, including four closures, three openings and five record (or database) changes.
Closures included The Advertiser, an Australian Community Media (ACM) masthead in Cessnock, New South Wales, which printed its final edition in November 2023.
Three national scale outlets were also added, including The Australian Property Journal, The Greek Herald and the National Indigenous Times.
The March results took the number of changes recorded in the database to 519, up from 473 in the same quarter last year.
The news sampling area for March was in the City of Bunbury and three nearby local government areas – the shires of Capel, Collie and Dardanup – in south-west Western Australia.
