Glenn Withers is an Economics Professor at the Australian National University and an Adjunct Professor at the University of New South Wales. He is board chair of the World Bank’s Global Development Learning Network and immediate past president of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.

His media related research is in the economics of arts, culture and media, beginning with early work on the Economics of the Performing Arts (with David Throsby) and continuing through to the chapter on Broadcasting and Television in the forthcoming Handbook of Cultural Economics (Edward Elgar).

He has also been an adviser in this field in Australia, coast to coast, from the Australia Council and Australian Broadcasting Corporation to West Coast Telecasters and Western Australian Newspapers. Glenn helped to establish the ANU’s Crawford School of Government, the Australia and New Zealand School of Government, the Productivity Commission and Universities Australia.

He has a PHD from Harvard University in economic history and recently co-edited The Cambridge Economic History of Australia (with Simon Ville). He was awarded an AO for development of the Australian immigration points system.
